What is Peripheral Blood Chromosome Analysis

What is Peripheral Blood Chromosome Analysis

What is Peripheral Blood Chromosome Analysis (PK)?

Newly married couples or mother and father candidates who want to have a baby should get genetic counseling and look at chromosome analysis, in other words karyotype determination.

With Chromosome Analysis, structural or numerical disorders in the chromosomes of individuals are diagnosed and diagnosed. Chromosomal anomalies in Chromosome Analysis; translocations, duplications and deletions are detected.

If crosomal defects that may occur during fertilization of individuals with translocation carriers are known by family members; In order for their children to be healthy, the family is informed that embryo selection should be made with IVF, that is, in vitro fertilization, instead of spontaneous pregnancy.

How is Chromosome Analysis Performed from Peripheral Blood?

Blood samples are taken from individuals in a green capped lithium heparin tube. The karyotype is determined by culturing this peripheral blood sample and then examining the chromosomes of each cell with high-level analysis methods from the culture within 5 days. People can learn the results of their tests between 7 (~) 10 days.

Who Should Chromosome Analysis From Peripheral Blood Be Performed?

  • Newly married couples,
  • Couples who want to have children,
  • Those who have a history of chromosomal analysis in the family tree,
  • Individuals engaged in consanguineous marriage,
  • Individuals suspected by the clinician,
  • Individuals with short stature, blindness, growth retardation, gender anomaly, unspecified genetic disorder found after birth.

Cytogenetics

It is the science that studies the numerical and structural states of chromosomes. Humans have 46 chromosomes (23 pairs). Two of these (X,Y) are sex chromosomes.

23 of the chromosomes come from the mother and 23 from the father. 22 of these chromosomes are automosal chromosomes and 1 pair are sex (X, Y genes related to reproduction) chromosomes.

Anomalies in these chromosomes have a significant impact on development, growth and organ functions. For example, a person with 47 chromosomes instead of 46 has Down Syndrome and accompanying physical feature changes.

Chromosomes have centromeres, p and q arms. It is defined as p on the short arm and q on the long arm. In the chromosome analysis from peripheral blood, each chromosome is evaluated with the help of high-tech software and devices and accompanied by an expert team, and a result report is given to you within 7 (~) 10 days.
